So sad to see you leave Drag Race – what was the highlight of your time on the show?
It’s hard to narrow it down because the whole experience was so surreal and a dream come true, but some highlights would be learning more about my drag and being able to create some really awesome looks with my designer Bryn Meredith, which I can’t wait to share with you all on my socials.
And what was the hardest part?
The hardest part for me was pushing through the imposter syndrome of being so fresh to drag up against all these other seasoned queens, and having the courage within myself to believe I am there for a reason and deserve to have my drag represented!
How do you feel about leaving so early?
To be honest, watching it back I was a little shocked to even be in the bottom, and the other queens agreed on the day. Seeing what I presented I was really proud of what I was able to show, and I know others can see what I have to offer. This is only the beginning for me and I will be making sure I saturate everyone with my other talents I didn’t get to show on your screens through the new platform I’m so lucky to have now!
What feedback have you had from people about your time on the show?
Everyone has been so incredibly supportive and were really sad to see me go. Coming off the back of the Drag Expo in Melbourne, I met so many amazing fans that made the whole experience worth it. Being the newest queen to drag on the show, my following has skyrocketed now and I can’t wait to show all my new fans what Aubrey’s all about!
What was it like representing Timaru on the world stage?
Representing Timaru was really special to me, having grown up there and experiencing the queerphobia that comes with smaller towns, I wanted to be a beacon of hope for the young queer kids growing up there now that it’s okay for them to be who they are. I also owe a lot to Timaru, it’s where I began my performing career, and despite the difficulties, there are so many people in that community that supported me so much and helped me to get to where I am today!
What are the Kiwi queens bringing to the show?
Being able to meet the other Kiwi queens was so damn lovely, I’d missed my Kiwi’s, having been in Aussie for a while now. We were able to really bond over our similar upbringings and little Kiwi culture references. The kiwi queens are like the rocks of the group, they bring that kiwi kindness and calm laid back approach to drag that I love!
What’s next for you?
Aubrey Haive is only just getting started, you can expect to see more amazing looks from me, and on top of that I’m currently writing some original music to release everywhere. My performing career began from busking on the streets of Timaru, and I’m looking forward to combining my easy listening pop music to my drag, giving you something new that I don’t think we have seen from drag queens. I’m excited to come back home to New Zealand soon to meet all my new kiwi fans, I’m long overdue a return to my homeland!
