We don’t know about you, but we’re not sure we like watching daredevil acts on talent shows. They’re stressful to witness and, well, what if something goes wrong?
For those of you who missed it, something did go horribly wrong on Tuesday night’s episode of America’s Got Talent.
Husband-and-wife acrobat duo, Mary Wolfe-Nielsen and Tyce Nielsen, who call themselves Duo Transcend, were performing a trapeze routine high up in the air when Tyce failed to catch his wife and she went crashing to the stage below – which was in flames.
Mary was not hurt but it certainly left the audience, the judges and the couple themselves horrified and shaken.
Tyce said afterwards, “I could feel her slipping through my hands and that feeling is just terrifying.”
The accident had happened because Tyce couldn’t see. He is nearly blind due to a progressive eye disease, and to intensify the drama the couple had introduced blindfolds to their act.
Tyce was relying on cues from the music to know when to grab at his wife’s feet.
What heightened the horror is that the couple’s two-year-old son was in the audience with his grandmother.
After Mary emerged, unhurt, from the flaming floor the embarrassed couple asked if they could try their act again. The answer from the judges was a resounding ‘no’.
Judge Mel B yelled, “No! It’s fine!”
Guest host Ken Jeong said, “This is not ‘America’s Got Perfection.’ It’s ‘America’s Got Talent.’ Nobody can do this. I mean, it’s OK!”
