Trooping the Colour 2024 was more than just a chance to ogle the royal family in all their finery and marvel at the spectacle of a ceremony that has been going strong since 1748.
It was a reminder of the determination of the Windsors to keep calm and carry on, despite the upheaval some members of the family have been through this year.
“The late Queen Elizabeth would have been proud at how the family pulled together so magnificently, and presented a strong message of unity and resilience,” says royal writer Emily Ferguson.
In a powerful image of solidarity, the King, 75, and his daughter-in-law the Princess of Wales, 42, who are both having treatment for cancer, stood alongside each other on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, exchanging smiles and demonstrating their bond, which has grown during the tough times they’ve been through.
Kate’s decision to attend the event was announced last minute. Having not appeared in public for six months due to her illness, Charles was said to be “delighted” that she was there.
Her children Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, nine, and Prince Louis, six, looked thrilled to have her by their sides, although her reassuring presence didn’t stop Louis stealing the show as usual, with his face-pulling and cheeky behaviour, which included dancing along to the music.
Royal commentator Sarah Vine says at time of global turmoil, many Brits look to the monarchy as a stabilising influence, and it was important to see them carrying out their roles in “in sickness and in health”.
“This was a show of strength, discipline and determination to keep going in the face of adversity that was every bit as impressive as the display taking place on the parade ground.”
