She is one of seven privileged people in the world who are allowed to wear the colour when meeting with the pope.

The Zimbabwe-born royal and her husband Prince Albert attended as part of a formal state visit between Monaco and the Vatican – the world’s two smallest countries.

The mother of two converted to Roman Catholicism when the palace announced the pair’s engagement in 2010.

Normally women are required to wear long black dresses with a high collar, long sleeves and a black mantilla when they meet the pope; however the honour of wearing white is bestowed upon Catholic queens and princesses like Princess Charlene. ‘The privilege of the white’ is called le privilége du blanc in French or il privilegio del biacno in Italian.

Queen Paola of Belgium, Queen Sofia of Spain, Princess Marina of Naples, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Queen Letizia of Spain and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg also have the privilege.
