Prince Harry and William have visited BBC’s DIY SOS team, to lend some muscle to the project renovating a derelict Manchester street into housing for veterans.

The royals played the part of home handymen well, in labelled hard hats and Hi Viz jackets. They weren’t afraid to get their hands dirty, either.

Prince William showed off his design flair, painting a kitchen. In the garden, Prince Harry mucked in, laying paving stones.

Resident John Wilkinson, 58, welcomed the royals, although admits Prince Harry might have been more a homewrecker than rebuilder.

Prince William has a brush with a builder on the DIY SOS project in Manchester.

“They were gentlemen. They were flirting with [my wife] Margaret more than anyone else. She was well chuffed with Harry. I think she is going to leave me!”

The royals joined hundreds of volunteers helping to convert properties on Canada Street, Newton Heath into homes for ex-service personnel. The scheme will update eight buildings and 62 house facades.
