Prince Charles impatient to be king?

He’s the longest-waiting heir in UK history, passing his great grandfather Edward VII, but Prince Charles knows how to have a laugh.

The 64-year-old spoke in jest about his impatience to take the throne from his mother at a belated birthday celebration at Dumfries House. “Impatient? Me? What a thing to suggest! Yes, of course I am,” joked the prince on a recording on the Clarence House website.

“I’ll run out of time soon. I shall have snuffed it if I’m not careful.”

At age 86, the Queen is still a very active monarch, and at an age when many people are starting retirement, Professor Robert Hazell, director of University College London’s constitution unit, commented that Charles is in a unique position.

“He’s not actually started the job he has spent his adult life preparing for. That is burdensome.”
