There’s a lot of protocol involved in picking a tiara to wear to special events.

Tiaras are often loaned to female members of the royal family by the Queen, but Kate (33) will also have several at her disposal that belonged to her husband Prince William’s mother Princess Diana.

In the four and a half years since she married into the royal family, Kate has only worn a tiara on a few occasions. The first time was on her wedding day, when she wore the Cartier Halo tiara, loaned to her by the Queen. The tiara was made by renowned jeweller Cartier in 1936 and bought by the Queen’s father George VI (then the Duke of York) for his wife, the Duchess of York (later the Queen Mother). The tiara was given to the Queen on her 18th birthday by her mother.

The other tiara Kate has worn twice – to a diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace in 2013 and an official state banquet this year. It’s the Papyrus tiara, which was originally a necklace. Also known as the Lotus Flower tiara, it too was owned by the Queen Mother, who later passed it on to her youngest daughter Princess Margaret.

The Strathmore Rose Tiara. Featuring diamond-encrusted roses, this delicate headpiece was given to the Queen Mother, then Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, in 1923 by her parents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore.

Queen Mary’s Fringe Tiara. A sentimental favourite that is not as cumbersome as it looks, this Russian-style tiara was made of 47 diamond bars from jewels given to Queen Mary by her mother-in-law Queen Victoria.

The Vladimir Tiara. This is one of the Queen’s favourite pieces, and the tiara she is wearing in the pictures on New Zealand banknotes.

The Cambridge Lover’s Knot Tiara. This tiara was popular with Princess Diana, who received it as a wedding gift from the Queen.

The Spencer Tiara. Diana wore this Spencer family heirloom at her wedding to Charles and reported that it gave her a splitting headache because she was not used to the weight of it.

Queen Alexandra’s Russian Kokoshnik Tiara. This is a whopper of a headpiece and one of the least subtle tiaras Kate could choose.
