The festive season is usually a time of great joy, but at the very end of 2016, our hearts were filled with sadness for the loss of three inspiring showbiz icons – George Michael, Carrie Fisher and her mother Debbie Reynolds.
Wham! superstar and “Faith” singer George was just 53 when he passed away at his Oxfordshire home on Christmas Day. In our six-page tribute, we honour the much-loved but deeply troubled musician, exploring his journey to stardom as well as his struggles with drugs and his sexuality. Super-fan Sarah-Kate Lynch also pays her respects to her all-time favourite pop hero.
Two days later, actress and writer Carrie Fisher, who will forever be known as Princess Leia from Star Wars, died in a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a massive heart attack at age 60. In the latest issue of Woman’s Day, we learn how this sassy, straight-talking star – born into Hollywood royalty – shook off the gold bikini and double-donut hairdo to cut a swathe through the showbiz world with her tales of life in the spotlight.
In a tragic twist, the next day, Carrie’s mother, Singin’ in the Rain legend Debbie Reynolds, who was already ailing, died of a stroke while preparing for her daughter’s funeral. The 84-year-old’s last words were, “I want to be with Carrie.”
