I couldn't keep away.

Breakfast time just hasn’t been the same without Matt McLean.

The much-loved presenter has returned to our screens in a new role following his departure nine months ago – but as he reveals exclusively in this week’s issue of New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, coming back to New Zealand this soon wasn’t exactly part of the plan.

Rather, a shock phone call completely changed his life – but Breakfast’s new weather presenter says he wouldn’t have had it any other way.

“It’s always been my dream show to work on, I feel like it’s my second home. Even when I was doing general news reporting, I couldn’t keep away from it. I always thought Breakfast would be where I ended up.”

Joining new hosts Hilary Barry, Brodie Kane and Daniel Faitaua, as well as best mate of 13 years Jack Tame, Matt (30) says he’s now living the dream, despite turning his back on his travel plans.

Working alongside Jack was a dream the pair have held since they graduated from broadcasting school, Matt reveals.

“Working together on the same show was something of a pipe dream – I remember us saying, ‘Imagine if we could both be presenters on the same show, that would be amazing!’ And now it’s happened.”

And despite a bit of a shaky first day back – “they’d changed a few things on me and didn’t tell me!” – the Queenstown-raised lad is quickly getting back into the groove of live crosses and weather reports.
