Fans of Netflix’s The Crown rejoice! You won’t have to wait too long to watch the Royal Family’s more recent history unfold.
Series creator and writer Peter Morgan has revealed to People we can expect the ill-fated marriage between Princess Diana and Prince Charles to light up our screens from the end of season three. The pair will then be “heavily” featured in the following two seasons.
The first season of the popular royal series, starring Claire Foy and Matt Smith, spanned from 1947 and 1955, and predominantly examined the start of Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.
Season two will pick up from 1957 and run through to 1964 with Morgan telling People it will “feature a greater emphasis on the life of Elizabeth’s husband Prince Philip and introduce a greater role for her oldest son and direct heir, Prince Charles”.
“We start to focus on Charles as a young boy and his education, and on Philip and his backstory.”
Charles and Diana met in 1977 through her sister, so season three will be largely be setting the scene for this encounter. This is the same season which we will see the main characters re-cast for older actors and actresses, in order to facilitate the time jump.
Diana and Charles wed in 1981, separated in 1992 and formally divorced in 1996, just one year prior to her untimely death in Paris so seasons four and five will cover the drama and scandals during this period.
It remains to be seen just how the writers plan to portray the People’s Princess, as they have been largely sympathetic towards the Monarchy up until this point.
However, the bigger question is: which actress will tackle this very important role and will she do it justice? And Morgan is not letting anything slip about those details just yet.
