Susan Wood’s miracle recovery

The brave journalist says she’s so grateful to be alive
Susan Wood's miracle recovery

In this week’s issue, beloved broadcaster Susan Wood talks exclusively to Woman’s Day about the harrowing accident she experienced six months ago and her miraculous comeback.

“I know I’m lucky to be alive. I know I’ve been given a second chance at life, and I’m just so grateful,” she tells us.

It’s been a long journey to recovery for the veteran journalist, but she’s finally ready to tell her story and assure the Kiwi public that she’s OK.

Susan’s family was a constant source of support during the difficult rehabilitation process, which saw the broadcaster slowly regaining her speech and mobility during an extended stay at a West Auckland centre.

While there are gaps in her memory for about a six-week period around the accident, Susan acknowledges this is a hidden blessing as she prefers to “look forward” rather than dwelling on that night.

“I think my outlook has changed perhaps,” she says.

“I’ve thought about life a lot. My boys and friends were so good to me. I count my blessings.”
