Rose Matafeo’s secret love

The Kiwi comedian reveals it has something to do with frying pans!

At school I wanted to be… A film director. I’ll get there one day!

The song that makes me want to dance is… Never Too Much by Luther Vandross. I defy you not to start grooving after that opening bass starts.

The comedian I most admire is… Steve Martin – he looked so good in a white suit onstage!

When I need to wind down I… Watch a film and embroider something. I’m very cool like that. Usually it’s weird badges for my friends with stupid in-jokes. I just made some for the crew on Funny Girls!

If I could bring someone famous/accomplished back from the dead it would be… Frank Sinatra, but only if he brought Ava Gardner with him. I love Frank, he’s one of the best singers to ever have lived, though he could be a massive downer at parties – we’d really get along because of that.

My perfect night with my friends is spent… At one of our houses, drinking wine we haven’t chilled enough, eating more takeaways than we should have ordered, watching YouTube videos. I party hard guys!

My advice to my 16-year-old self would be… Everything you’re wearing right now is awful, but I swear it will make you a better person as an adult.

If I won a billion dollars I would… Buy a very nice frying pan. I’d probably buy heaps of other stuff but the frying pan would be the priority. Maybe cast iron – apparently they retain heat very well.

The thing I always carry in my handbag is… My backpack always has my reusable grocery bag, a pen, a notebook, my Kindle and usually my birth control pill. Most of the time I will have a pencil case filled with pens – ballpoint and ink – of varying sizes. This is why I do not carry a handbag – it’s far too small for all the stuff I need.

My greatest overseas discovery has been… Barbecue beef brisket from Pecan Lodge in Dallas. I honestly tear up whenever I remember that meal.

Three words my friends would use to describe me… Sleepy, sassy and clumsy.

The film that changed my life was… Bridget Jones’s Diary. I watched that film nearly every night as a teenager. I don’t know if it changed my life but it probably gave me an unrealistic idea of romance and English winters.

My signature dish is… Spaghetti with homemade tomato sauce. I’m sure I was supposed to be born Italian.

My dream holiday destination… Samoa! I’ve never been there which is ridiculous. I hope I can visit in the next couple of years.
