Rita Wilson opens up about breast cancer diagnosis

Rita, 58, has spoken out about the importance of getting a second opinion after her own breast cancer almost went undiagnosed.

In a statement to People, Rita revealed she recently had a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery in a bid to fight the illness.

“Last week, with my husband by my side, and with the love and support of family and friends, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy and reconstruction for breast cancer after a diagnosis of invasive lobular carcinoma,” she said in the statement.

“I am recovering and most importantly, expected to make a full recovery. Why? Because I caught this early, have excellent doctors and because I got a second opinion.”

The actress went on to explain how a friend had encouraged her to seek a second opinion after the first tests showed no cancer. Her diagnosis was eventually confirmed by two separate pathologists.

“I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn’t ‘feel’ right,” she said.
