Prince's cause of death revealed

Prince died of an accidental painkiller overdose, a medical examiner has ruled.

The 57-year-old pop legend, who was found dead at his Paisley Park mansion in late April, passed away after administering himself fentanyl, a powerful opioid used to treat pain, the medical examiner’s office in Minnesota said in a statement.

The report from the medical examiner’s office, which was released on Twitter, didn’t provide many details.

“How injury occurred: The decedent self-administered fentanyl,” the report said. For manner of death, a box was marked for “accident.”

Very little other detail was given however the sheriff’s department in Minnesota’ Carver County is still investigating.

Fentanyl, a synthetic opiate, is more powerful than morphine and is often prescribed to treat chronic pain and cancer.

It’s 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Prince was found dead at his Minneapolis-area estate on April 21, days after his private plane made an emergency landing that was also reportedly due to a painkiller overdose.
