Mike King marries his queen

A slight hitch with their marriage licence almost threw Mike King and Joanna Methven’s laid-back island wedding for a loop, but luckily Simon Dallow was there to save the day!

The couple, who wed in an intimate, low-key ceremony at Rarotonga’s Vai Villas, had forgotten to bring their birth certificates with them to the island paradise. Without the certificates, they couldn’t legally tie the knot.

Fortunately, Simon offered to pick up replacement documents for the couple before flying in for the big day, ultimately saving the wedding!

Mike King and Joanna Methven wed in an intimate, low-key ceremony at Rarotonga’s Vai Villas, with their 23-month-old daughter Charlie looking on.

The laid-back beach wedding was almost derailed when the couple realised they had forgotten to bring their birth certificates!

Luckily, Mike’s good friend Simon Dallow was able to save the day, picking up replacement documents from Internal Affairs before flying out for the wedding.

The deed was enough to secure Simon the spot of Mike’s best man, which is how the One News presenter came to be standing next to Mike and Jo, holding little Charlie, as the couple tied the knot!

Mike, 53, and Jo, 42, wed in front of just five guests at the incredibly intimate ceremony.

The couple first met in 2007, and their initial bond slowly blossomed into romance.

“It was so beautiful and emotional,” Jo says of the couple’s big day.

This is Mike’s third wedding and Jo’s second, but the comedian compares finding love to looking for pearls in oysters. “Well, you have to shuck a lot of oysters to find the pearl – and I’ve found the best pearl. She’s glittering, white and lovely!” he says.

For Jo, it’s all about being the “last” love. “I kept thinking of this quote I saw the other day: Being someone’s first love is great, but to be their last is beyond perfect. I feel so lucky we get to grow old together,” Jo says.

After the ceremony, the wedding party moved to the reception held at the iconic The Mooring Fish Cafe on Muri Beach.

Mike says Simon (left) is his “go-to guy” when he’s in trouble. Here, Mike and Joanna are pictured with Simon and his partner Louise.

Mike and Joanna had been thinking about getting hitched in Fiji, but they fell in love with Rarotonga after running a suicide prevention programme on the island.

“We instantly felt at home,” Jo says.

For Mike, the wedding is the “final foundation stone” in his relationship with Jo.

“There are plenty of building blocks to go, but this is the last thing we needed to solidify and grow together,” he says.
