Prime Minister John Key sent shock waves throughout the country today when he announced his resignation, effective from December 12.
In an emotional speech, Key explained that his job as Prime Minister had “come at quite some sacrifice from the people who are dearest to me, my family”.
He spoke of wife Bronagh having to endure “many lonely nights” and children Stephie and Max facing “extraordinary levels of intrusion” due to his job.
“This is the hardest decision I’ve ever made and I don’t know what I’ll do next,” he told reporters.
“I gave everything I had, I had nothing left in the tank.”
