In her recent interview with Britain’s GQ magazine, in which she posed nude as she was named Woman of the Year, Kim described how the naming came about: “It was a rumour in the press and we’d never really considered [the name North] seriously at all. But Kanye and I were having lunch … and Pharrell came over to us and said, ‘Oh my god, are you guys really going to call your daughter North? That is the best name.’”
Kim dismissed it at the time, saying it was just a rumour. When she was interviewed by Jay Leno while still pregnant, she even laughed off the suggestion that they might name their baby North when he brought it up with her on The Tonight Show.
“Then a little while later Anna Wintour came over and asked the same thing,” Kim continued. “She told us ‘North is a genius name.’ Kanye and I looked at one another and just laughed. I guess at that point it sort of stuck.”
While North is generally called Nori for short, her parents also refer to her as their “North Star”.
