A man who believed he was having a relationship with Katy Perry has garnered the singer’s sympathy after she found out he was being scammed.
Speaking about the incident in a recent interview, the Roar singer said what had happened to Spencer Morrill made her “sad”.
Spencer’s story appeared on an episode of the MTV reality TV show Catfish. The show tracks people who have been caught up in online scams and fake relationships.
Katy Perry on love, dating and fame
The Tennessee man believed he’d been having a relationship with the hugely successful pop singer for six years, despite never having met her and only having spoken to her on the phone once.
He also believed he’d been sent unreleased songs by the star as well as having traded emails, texts and videos with her.
Spencer also revealed marriage may have been on the card – having gone and bought his “girlfriend” a $25,000 engagement ring.
Katy admitted on SiriusXM Spencer’s story had upset her and, that she’d struggled to read it when someone sent her a link.
“You know, like, my heart goes out to (him) actually because anybody that’s been fooled like that or just, you know … people have dreams, and people live in different parts of world where not everything is always so accessible,” she said.
“I felt bad for him, and so I didn’t really like to indulge in that. Someone sent me a link and I didn’t actually read through it because I just think it’s really unfortunate and very sad.”
Catfish caught up with the woman behind the scam who, while apologetic, didn’t seem unduly fazed by being exposed, the Sun reported.
“I can’t really change what I did, but I understand it was really wrong.”
