Following the news that his daughter Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from her husband Brad Pitt, Jon Voight has spoken out about his sadness and concern.
“It’s very sad,” he told Inside Edition.
“Something very serious must have happened for Angie to make a decision like this.”
The 77-year-old has had a troubled relationship with his daughter for years, and was not invited to the couple’s wedding in France in 2014.
According to NY Daily News, during an appearance on Access Hollywood in 2012 he claimed that Jolie had “serious mental problems” on national television.
He also spoke out about his “greatest pain” being not having yet met his 13-month-old grandson Maddox, who Angelina adopted.
“I’m brokenhearted because I have been trying to reach my daughter and get her help. I’m sorry I haven’t come forward before and addressed her serious mental problems. But I have tried behind the scenes in every way.”
“My daughter doesn’t want to see me because I’ve made it very clear to her what the situation is and the help that she needs.”
Angelina then hit back with accusations that he had an affair behind her mother’s back.
Following this incident, Angelina cut contact with her father for six years and dropped “Voight” from her last name.
It wasn’t until Angelina’s mother was battling ovarian cancer that she publically reconciled with her father.
Jon had previously spoken out about his affection for Angelina’s husband, and was thrilled that he was part of the family.
“I’m very happy that I can legitimately call him my son-in-law, this wonderful fellow who I love,” he told Good Morning Britain.
‘The children have been bugging them for a long time to get married and the time was right.’
Jon is reportedly devastated about the news of their split, and has plans to reunite with Angelina and his grandchildren.
“I am concerned for Angie and the children and hopefully I will be seeing them very soon.”
