Just weeks ago, beloved builder John “Cocksy” Cocks revealed he had been given two years to live after being diagnosed with terminal cancer.
While the courageous television personality has been undergoing treatment for kidney cancer, which has spread to his lungs and spine, he admits he’s also begun drinking the controversial water product, Te Kiri Gold.
Last year the water, produced by Taranaki farmer Vernon Coxhead, made headlines world wide, after it was revealed rugby great Sir Colin Meads was taking it.
In his interview with The Herald on Sunday, the star of My House, My Castle and DIY Rescue said he had been drinking the water for about three weeks.
“When you are in my situation and people are relying on you still to be around you give everything a shot. I know it’s not going to kill me, because something else is already killing me,” Cocksy says.
The water, which sells for $100 a bottle, has been touted as a cancer “game-changer” by its creator, although other claims of its therapeutic benefits have been largely anecdotal.
An earlier report by NZME into the chemical composition of the water revealed the product contained a high amount of salt and chlorine and did not meet the Government’s safe drinking water guidelines.
Cocksy says he’s not put off by what the water contains but admits “it tastes like a swimming pool with 4-year-olds who have peed in it.”
While the product claims to offer some relief in the short term, it also comes with a warning that some symptoms may become worse.
The father of three says the side effects from his medical treatment have been just as bad, and he was committed to completing the eight-week trial.
