Comedian Joan Rivers, 81, remains in a critical condition as her daughter Melissa Rivers, releases a new statement with an update on her mother’s condition.

“On behalf of my mother and our family, we are extremely grateful for all the love and support we’ve received. At this time she does remain on life support,” the statement from Joan’s daughter Melissa Rivers read.

“I know my mother would be overwhelmed by the continued outpouring of kindness and I want to thank everyone for keeping us in their prayers.”

Joan was rushed to hospital Mount Sinai Hospital last week following complications during a minor elective throat procedure.

Joan stopped breathing during throat surgery at a Manhattan medical clinic and went into cardiac and respiratory arrest. On the weekend, she was placed in a medically induced coma, which doctors planned to start taking her out of yesterday.

There were fears though that she could be left brain damaged or in a permanently vegetative state as it is thought that her motor skills could be affected. A source also told TMZ that the family will be forced to make a decision whether or not to keep her on life support.

“We’re told the family remains hopeful that if they do decide to turn off the machines, she will make a turn for the better and fight through it,” the source told TMZ.

The entertainer Joan is known for her role on the E! network show Fashion Police. A special edition of the show was originally scheduled to be recorded and aired this week for New York Fashion Week but this has now been cancelled as her co-hosts, including Kelly Osbourne and Giuliana Rancic, remain hopeful that their friend will make a recovery.
