Comedian and actress Joan Rivers has been hospitalised, after she stopped breathing during a surgical procedure on her vocal cords.

The 81-year-old star was put into a medically induced coma after the incident and is currently recovering at Mt Sinai hospital in New York. Her daughter Melissa is said to be flying across the country to be by her mother’s side.

Joan’s condition has since been upgraded from critical to stable, according to multiple sources.

A spokesman for the hospital released a statement on behalf of Joan’s family, saying they wanted to “thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support.”

Update: Melissa Rivers has now released her own statement:

“I want to thank everyone for the overwhelming love and support for my mother. She is resting comfortably and is with our family. We ask that you continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers.”
