Jim Carey is being sued over his ex-girfriend’s death, calling the lawsuit a: “heartless attempt to exploit me and the woman I loved.”
The Bruce Almighty actor has been issued with a lawsuit from Cathriona White’s husband, Mark Burton, alleging that the Hollywood star supplied her with the prescription drugs that contributed to her death.
30-year-old Cathriona was found dead at her home in Los Angeles in September 2015, with many suspecting she had committed suicide.
The Los Angeles County Coroner later ruled that Cathriona, who was originally from Ireland, died from a lethal overdose of prescription drugs including Ambien, propranolol and a “massive dose” of Percocet.
At the time of her death, Carrey released a statement saying:
“I am shocked and saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona. She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled.
My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”
Responding to the wrongful death lawsuit, filed by Cathriona’s widow, Carrey said: “It would be easy for me to get in a back room with this man’s lawyer and make this go away, but there are some moments in life when you have to stand up and defend your honour against the evil in this world.
“I will not tolerate this heartless attempt to exploit me or the woman I loved.
“I really hope that someday soon people will stop trying to profit from this and let her rest in peace.”
Mark Burton and Cathriona White married in 2013, but the couple were allegedly separated at the time of her death.
Jim and Cathriona appeared to have an on/off relationship from 2013 up until the make-up artist’s death.
