How are you spending this summer?
Relaxing where possible and trying to win games of Finska [woodchuck game] in the backyard. Walks on the beach. There’s also a Scrunchy Millers ice cream caravan that is a two-minute walk from home, so they’ll be sick of the sight of us by summer’s end.
What lessons from 2024 are you bringing into the new year?
When something good is happening, really embrace it and soak it all in. Take photos and make memories. Life is hard and we all go through tough times, so spending good times with family and friends, and truly feeling grateful for that.
What’s your favourite summer sport or outdoor activity?
Backyard cricket. My wife’s entire family came together for a celebration a few years ago and there were about 15 of us playing backyard cricket for about 12 hours. Best. Day. Ever.

Best fish and chips in New Zealand?
Mangonui Fish Shop in Northland. We had heard the hype and thought surely it can’t be that good. But that had to be the freshest fish I have ever eaten. The hype is real.
What is your go-to summer drink or cocktail?
Somersby Apple Cider. You’ve been out in the sun having fun, so having a few of those on a hot day is so good!
If you could only pack three items for a summer trip, what would they be?
A phone charger. Practical yes, but a nightmare without one. Sunglasses – I left them behind once for a summer road trip and squinted my way through the whole thing! A flexible attitude. Having a plan is great, but being flexible to the possibility of saying yes to a random opportunity that pops up on a holiday? Could be fun – go explore.
