When we last spoke to Georgina Beyer, the colourful former politician was in a bad way.
Diagnosed with heart disease, her scheduled kidney transplant was cancelled and she was preparing to go off dialysis, something that would eventually lead to her death.
However, Georgina has since had a miraculous recovery from her cardiomyopathy – and she has a kidney donor all lined up.
Meet the man giving the world’s first transsexual MP the gift of life and read all about her plans for the future in the latest issue of Woman’s Day.
Meanwhile, Georgina wants to thank everyone who has sent her messages of support after reading about her journey to good health in our magazine.
“I’ve received a wide range of incredible encouragement, aroha and love,” the former Dancing with the Stars contestant tells us. “I’m receiving fan mail in hospital! Woman’s Day readers have been a big part of that.
“It’s been lovely and a big help in keeping my spirits up. It’s very easy to slip into a depression when things aren’t going quite right.
“There were times I was thinking about the death scenario, but when I get those letters and cards, it’s made me think, ‘Oh, actually, people care – you can’t flippantly think about giving it all up!’”
