The proud parents have marked the arrival of their baby daughter Max with a surprising announcement detailing their plans to give away a significant amount of their $45 billion fortune, in the hopes of improving the world their daughter will grow up in.

In an open letter to their newborn daughter, Mark and Priscilla wrote about the many issues facing today’s global population and how Max has made them think about what they can do to help.

“Dear Max,” the letter begins.

“Your new life is full of promise, and we hope you will be happy and healthy so you can explore it fully. You’ve already given us a reason to reflect on the world we hope you live in.

“Like all parents, we want you to grow up in a world better than ours today.”

In their letter, the couple also announced the new Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, which aims to “advance human potential” and “promote equality” for the next generation, with a focus on education, curing diseases and building communities.

As part of their efforts, Mark and Priscilla have confirmed they will give 99% of their Facebook shares (worth approximately $45 billion) to help achieve their vision of a brighter future.

“Max, we love you and feel a great responsibility to leave the world a better place for you and all children,” they wrote.

“We wish you a life filled with the same love, hope and joy you give us. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this world. Love, Mom and Dad.”

The Facebook post has already gained over 271,000 likes, with congratulations flooding in from Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and Melinda Gates, co-founder of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation alongside her husband, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates.

“Mark and Priscilla: Congratulations – we’re thrilled for both of you!,” Melinda wrote in a comment.

“As for your decision to give back so generously, and to deepen your commitment now, the first word that comes to mind is: Wow. The example you’re setting today is an inspiration to us and the world.”
