Emma Stone’s embarrassing TV musical debut

The La La Land star has come a long way since her early television days.
Emma Stone's early television appearance

Emma Stone may have taken out the best actress award for her role in La La Land at this year’s Oscars, but her earliest efforts show she’s been honing her musical chops for years.

Before her breakthrough the 2007 movie Superbad, the 28-year-old revealed in a interview with Rolling Stone she’d had to hustle for roles with the best of them.

While the young actress got plenty of bit parts, her first credited TV role was for an appearance on a pilot – under her original name Emily – on the talent competition show In Search of the New Partridge Family.

The mid-noughties reality show based on the 70’s sitcom classic The Partridge Family didn’t get beyond the pilot stage so there’s limited footage of Emma’s now “vintage” performance.

But in the flashback clip below, Emma shows she fairly sure of her teenaged-self as she belts out Meredith Brooks hit Bitch.

There’s also her duet version of Pat Benetar’s We Belong which the talented then 16-year-old sung with as much rock ‘n’ roll spirit as she could muster.

While her charismatic performances would see her score the role of Laurie Partridge, the reality show wasn’t picked up beyond its first episode.

Obviously, Emma’s musical ability has served her well though. Her 2016 star turn in La La Land, which paid homage to the era of classic Hollywood musicals, saw her sing, and dance her way through number of scenes with her co-star, Ryan Gosling.
