Ed Sheeran’s ‘accidental’ face slashing by Princess Beatrice during a mock-knighting ceremony made headlines around the world last year.

But as it turns out, the story was completely untrue. Ed’s good friend, British crooner James Blunt who was at the November 28 party has revealed the pair made the whole thing up.

“Ed was drunk, messing around, and he cut himself. We made a fancy story up; people fell for it. It was very embarrassing,” he told ShortList.

James went on to joke a “desperate” Ed made the story up to try to sell records, and he was surprised that people fell for it.

News of Ed’s faux knighting first surfaced last year when it was reported the singer was taken to hospital after sustaining a cut near to his eye while at an event at the Royal Lodge in Windsor, home to Bea’s dad, Andrew.

The original story doing the rounds was that at some point during the party James was being fake knighted by the Princess who accidently swung the sword in the direction of Ed, clipping him deep enough that he required medical attention.

At time Ed stayed silent on the details of what happened, but later revealed that he “got hit in the face”

The singer went on to say he didn’t make too much of it but when he looked down at his shirt, it was “just completely covered in blood.”

Making a joke of the incident during the interview, the hitmaker continued that James actually wanted him to tell people that it had been the You’re Beautiful singer who was the sword-wielding culprit.

“James Blunt would like me to tell everyone that it was him and he was trying to reclaim his pop career by killing me,” he said.

Buckingham Palace hasn’t commented on the incident to date.
