Irish PR professional John Dineen, who had been dating British actress Michelle Dockery for two years, died from a rare form of cancer on Sunday, aged 34.

According to Daily Mail he passed away at a hospice near his home outside of Cork.

The Downton Abbey star – who plays Lady Mary Crawley in the period drama – rushed back from the US, where she was promoting the show, to be by her fiancé's side in his final hours.

‘The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private,’ a spokesperson for Michelle Dockery said of her partner's passing.

The pair were introduced by Michelle’s co-star Allen Leech in 2013. She kept the relationship mostly private, but said in 2014: “I have a wonderful man in my life from Ireland. We were introduced by Allen Leech. That's all you need to know.’

The couple became engaged earlier this year.
