The star left a US promotional tour for Downton late last week after hearing of her 34-year-old fiancé’s deteriorating condition, rushing back to Ireland to join him at a hospice in Cork.
John, a 34-year-old London-based public relations executive, was reportedly diagnosed with a rare form of cancer earlier this year.
He and Michelle had been dating for two years after being introduced through mutual friend Allen Leech, who plays Tom Branson on the beloved British drama series. Michelle, who turned 34 on Tuesday, has reportedly spent her birthday helping John’s family make the funeral arrangements.
“The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private,” Michelle said in a statement released by her publicist.
Last night, Michelle joined over a hundred of Mr Dineen’s close family and close friends at a wake held at the Church of St James, close to his childhood home.
A private funeral for Mr Dineen is expected to be held in Cork today.
