One of Coronation Street’s most iconic stars has died.
Jean Alexander, known to millions as the formidable Hilda Ogden, passed away just three days after her 90th birthday.
Her niece, Sonia Hearld said her aunt was taken into hospital on her birthday.
Sonia told the Mirror the Liverpool-born actress had complained that day of not feeling well and had been admitted to hospital for testing.
She died peacefully, three days later.
News of Jean’s death, Sonia said, had come as “such as shock”.
“I saw her last week and she seemed weak and a bit tired but this was still a shock.”
The Coro Street star was a fixture on the show for 23 years.
Her many fans have taken to social media to express their condolences.
