She’s been happily married to businessman Rande Gerber for over 15 years now, but it was Cindy Crawford’s first marriage to Hollywood hunk Richard Gere that taught her the tricks of the celebrity trade.

The supermodel has always opted to keep the secrets of that four-year marriage under wraps, but in a new interview with Porter magazine, she revealed what she took from her time with the Pretty Woman actor.

“Look, I learned a lot from Richard. I learned how to be famous,” she told the publication.

“Again, that’s not a universal lesson. And a lot of the personal things, everything else I learned from that, were for me,” she added, explaining why her time with Richard isn’t part of her new memoir Becoming.

“If I felt that there was a great good that could come of it, I might have shared more, but I didn’t think that there was anything for other people to learn or benefit from. And I wanted to be respectful.”

Cindy and Richard first met in 1987, during a barbecue at iconic photographer Herb Ritts’ house. The model was just 21 years old at the time, on the cusp of the worldwide fame that would follow her throughout the rest of her career. The duo began dating soon afterwards and tied the knot in 1991.

During their four-year marriage, Cindy said Richard taught her how to handle the attention that came with being a celebrity.

“When I would see how he was with fans when they approached him, a lot of the times it wouldn’t be a good moment to sign an autograph, shake a hand or sign a picture,” she said in a 2013 interview for Oprah’s Master Class.

“But I got to look at him to see how he created boundaries for himself that felt good,” Cindy added.
