Chris Hemsworth reveals he’s uncomfortable about his wealth, and it’s for a surprisingly humble reason

''I feel gross about it,'' the Thor star says.

You would be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t like earning more than $80 million a year, unless you’re Aussie actor Chris Hemsworth, that is.

The Thor star has revealed that he feels uncomfortable about his net worth, and it’s for quite a humble reason.

Hemsworth earned a whopping $88.2 million last financial year according to The Daily Telegraph, but the actor says he “feels gross” about his earnings, and fears for his children because of it.

Chris is the fourth-highest paid actor in Hollywood.

“The fact that we have money and their parents are famous, that somehow they’re special, that scares me because we grew up with no money,” he told GQ.

Speaking about his own childhood, the former Home and Away actor said he remembered it taking him a whole year to save up $600 for a surfboard.

“I didn’t even want to surf on it for fear of damaging it. It taught me so many lessons about appreciation and working hard for something,” he said.

“When I think about my kids, I don’t want them to miss that joy.”

Chris said he and wife Elsa Pataky want to “instil that same appreciation and respect for things,” ensuring their children have a grounded upbringing.

The Hemsworth/Pataky clan are currently building a home in Sydney’s Byron Bay estimated to be worth an eye-watering $9 million, but it hasn’t all been smooth sailing.

The eight bedroom, multi-storey property has the locals up in arms, with some saying it looks completely out of place in the picturesque region.

Once finished, the house will have a state-of-the-art spa, sauna and a media room. There’s also a luxury gym and infinity pool on the roof.

An insider told Woman’s Day that all the negativity from Byron locals was a “real heartache” for Chris and Elsa.

“They insist they went into this with every good intention, and they’re not disturbing anybody by building themselves a dream home in the region they both love.

“It’s a shame from their point of view that people are giving them a hard time and choosing to be negative, but they’re going full-steam ahead and can’t wait for it to be finished.”

It’s no secret Chris is a family man through and through. He and close friend Matt Damon have been known to go on family holidays together, most recently in July where the double-dating broods went to the North Coast of Spain together.

In the interview with GQ, Chris also opened up about how his family has impacted his career, saying if he and Elsa hadn’t met he wonders how difference his career would be.

“Have I made decisions based on that? How has that influenced me?” he mused.

The 35-year-old went on to add: “There’s times when I’ve thought, ‘Wow, because having kids is more important to me, some of my roles have suffered’.”

“There’s definitely a couple of films I could’ve put way more energy into but I was like, ‘No, I’d rather be with my kids’.”
