The comment was made during a segment of the Black Entertainment Television (BET) show 106 & Park, which Karrueche was guest hosting for the night.
Along with her co-presenter, Karrueche began counting down the “top six things Blue Ivy thought about the VMAs”.
She then jumped in with this scripted line: “I really did wake up like this, because my parents never comb my hair.”
Blue’s hair has been a controversial issue in the past, with many criticising Beyonce and Jay Z for the way they choose to care for and style it. On the flipside, just as many fans have come to the couple’s defence, calling the comments unfair.
When Karrueche made the joke on air on Monday, the crowd let out audibly shocked sounds. Her co-presenter immediately shook his head, and Karrueche herself followed up with a quick apology, saying “sorry Blue! I love you”.
However, that wasn’t enough for Beyonce’s legions of fans (collectively known as the BeyHive), who attacked Karrueche for the joke.
The heat generated by the gaffe even prompted Stephen Hill, BET’s head of music programming, to wade into the debate. Shortly after the incident he tweeted a series of apologies trying to clear Karrueche of any blame.
“Last night on 106 & Park there was a stupid, unthoughtful joke made about a young child,” he wrote.
“We apologize publically to the child’s parents (and have done so privately) and we have taken punitive actions with those responsible.
“Oh, and please don’t hate on Karrueche; it was NOT her fault. We also apologize to her for putting her in that position.”
