Their on-screen love story as Princess Leia and Han Solo was one of the most memorable parts of the original Star Wars trilogy – and now, Carrie Fisher has revealed that the romance followed the pair off-screen too, and why after all this time she’s finally coming clean.
In an except from her book The Princess Diarist, the 60-year-old says she had a secret affair with Harrison Ford while filming the original Star Wars in 1976.
“It was so intense,” she confessed to People.
“It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend.”
After discovering some of her old journals she kept during her affair with Harrison, she decided she had kept her secret for long enough.
“It’s been 40 years!” she told People
“I didn’t say anything to anybody for years but it’s not like anyone’s deeply affected by it anymore.”
Despite plenty of fan speculation about the matter, this is the first time Carrie has spoken publicly about her relationship with her dashing co-star.
“Harrison’s very private, but I think I waited an appropriate amount of time,” she says. “How much longer could I wait?”
At the time of the affair, which took place over three months, Carrie was only 19, while Harrison Ford was a 33-year-old married father-of-two.
A then-teenage Carrie spent her first night with Harrison following a birthday party for director George Lucas, and she was stricken with self-doubt.
“I looked over at Harrison. A hero’s face — a few strands of hair fell over his noble, slightly furrowed brow,” she writes. “How could you ask such a shining specimen of a man to be satisfied with the likes of me?”
Carrie reveals that she was “wine-sodden” and that Harrison offered to drive her home, where the two ended up in bed.
RadarOnline quotes her as saying that she was a bad kisser and felt bad, but that “Harrison’s love making wasn’t exactly up to scratch either”.
Her book contains excerpts from a diary she kept of the affair, in which she said she tried ”relentlessly” to make him love her and fantasized that he would ask her to marry him and give her a “gold band with diamonds inscribed with ‘Carrison.”
While their romance only lasted three months, the actress and author remembers the time fondly.
“I was so inexperienced, but I trusted something about him,” she says. “He was kind.”
Following the affair, Harrison returned to his then-wife Mary Marquardt, but the pair eventually split three years later.
Carrie and Harrison recently appeared together in last year’s The Force Awakens.
She has previously admitted to having had a crush on Ford during filming and wanting to have an affair while filming.
Harrison, who had a heads-up about the book from Fisher and received a draft, has yet to release his own response to Carrie’s bombshell claims.
