The wait is almost over! Tomorrow morning our beloved broadcaster Hilary Barry is back on the box, sitting alongside her co-presenter Jack Tame on the new Breakfast set at TVNZ for the very first time.

Hilary, 46, fresh from a four-month break following her shock resignation from TV3 in May, tells Woman’s Day in the latest issue that she couldn’t be more excited about her new start with TVNZ.

After 23 years with TV3, the award-wining journalist admits she was “exhausted” when she left.

“I had been working both ends of the day for 11 years, but the past year had been far more intense. It wasn’t sustainable,” she confesses.

Hilary reveals she used her time off work to “recharge the batteries”, enjoying reconnecting with her family – husband Michael, and sons Finn, 16, and Ned, 14 – and an overseas trip to Europe before embarking on the next busy chapter of her career with TVNZ.

“I feel genuinely excited to get my teeth into the next project,” she tells in her first official chat alongside Jack, 29. “I’ve been a fan of Jack’s for a long time … I do feel very confident this is a combination that’s really going to work.”

And Jack – literally stepping off a plane from New York on the day of our Woman’s Day photo shoot – is just as sure he and Hilary will get on great in the new television role.

“She’s just so widely considered to be incredible professionally but also a lovely person,” he says. “Her reputation absolutely precedes her.”

Jack, who also works for Newstalk ZB with a Saturday morning show, has moved back to New Zealand for the Breakfast job after five years in New York where he worked as the US correspondent.

But he confesses, in his Woman’s Day story, that there was another draw card – he is dating a Kiwi girlfriend.
