Boy actor James Rolleston has taken to the stage once more – to present an award at the Attitude Awards in Auckland on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old actor, who found fame starring in Taika Waititi’s cult Boy movie, was seriously injured in a car crash in Opotiki back in July.

James was lucky to get away with his life, after the car he was travelling in hit a bridge, and “half the bridge” ended up in the car, reported emergency responders.

Rolleston spent a month in Waikato Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit for his injuries, but appeared on stage at the Attitude Awards in Greenlane last night to recognise the achievements of Kiwis living with disabilities.

Presenting the ACC Supreme Award at the ceremony, James was also joined by fellow stars Sonny Bill Williams and Cliff Curtis at the awards.

James’ nan Christina said her grandson now works with a slight limp since the accident over the winter, and still has some issues with his speech.

“His speech is good but not good enough to be in front of the camera yet,” she told the New Zealand Herald.

“But he has a strong inner drive so he’ll make it.”

Christina also reported that her grandson says he has learnt that life is “a gift” and he’s to do everything he can to treasure it.

James made his name as Alamein in 2010’s Boy set here in New Zealand. It became the most successful local film released in NZ, and gave the young actor local celebrity status.

He has now started rehabilitation in Auckland, where he does physiotherapy, swimming and speech therapy.
