New Zealand actress Anna Hutchison has revealed her latest screen character was the most difficult, and challenging, performance of her career.

The actress stars in a gritty new movie Nicolas Cage movie – Vengeance: A Love Story – playing a sexual assault victim.

Anna (31) plays Teena Maguire – a single mother who was raped by four men in front of her 12-year-old daughter, Bethie.

When her character’s efforts to bring her attackers to justice fail, Detective John Dromoor, played by Nicolas Cage steps in, and takes the law into his own hands.

Anna told The Herald on Sunday she had spent a “dark couple of months” preparing for the role – immersing herself in the stories of sexual abuse survivors, as well as working closely with her Kiwi acting coach, Miranda Harcourt.

“I watched many documentaries about sexual assault victims, talk shows with sexual assault as the theme.”

“I watched films that tackle sexual assault. Also I read several books in which females were raped. It was a very dark couple of months,” she said.

Variety reports the film is directed by Nicolas Cage, which is based on the Joyce Carol Oates’ 2003 novella, Rape: A Love Story.

As well as appearing alongside the Hollywood heavyweight in the yet-to-be released thriller, the former Shorty Street star also starred in the horror movie The Cabin in the Woods.

Along with other big screen credits to her name, the actress has also appeared in a range of television roles including Power Rangers, Underbelly, and Go Girls.
