High profile actress Angelina Jolie has written a letter to President Trump, following his controversial Muslim ban.
The international community has reacted strongly following news that Mr Trump signed an executive order which prohibits Muslims from entering the US at this time.
The ban halts the American refugee programme for four months and the entry of Syrian refugees indefinitely. It also bans tourists and immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries for 90 days.
It’s understood the move by the new US government prompted Jolie, who is an active humanitarian and special envoy to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, to speak out against the decision.
In her letter, Jolie asked readers to consider the words of former conservative US President Ronald Reagan who said “America is committed to the world because so much of the world is inside America”.

“Refugees are men, women and children caught in the fury of war,’ she wrote, before reminding readers that “Americans have shed blood to defend the idea that human rights transcend culture, geography, ethnicity and religion.

“The decision to suspend the resettlement of refugees to the United States and deny entry to citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries has been met with shock by our friends around the world precisely because of this record,” she continued.
Jolie also referenced her children in the letter “who were all born in foreign lands and are proud American citizens,” as well as expressing a wish for their safety “I very much want our country to be safe for them, and all our nation’s children.”
Writing in the New York Times, Jolie drew attention to the fact that it was untrue that American borders were being overrun adding only “a miniscule fraction – less that 1 percent – of all refuges in the world are ever resettled in the United States or any other country.”
