In a revealing letter originally published on Refinery 29, iO Tillett Wright explains the moment she finally decided enough was enough – after hearing of several incidents of alleged domestic violence against Amber.
The artist, who describes Depp as “a person I loved very much” explains how she eventually called 911 on the actor when she heard him threatening his wife while she was on the phone to her.
“Every time it happened, the sweet, loving man we all cared for so much would come back with apologies, profuse, swearing up and down that he understood how bad what he had done was, and swearing never to do it again. We all loved him, but especially, especially her, and she wanted to believe that the behavior wasn’t going to last.”
Tillett explains how Amber had told her of small violent incidences over the course of their friendship, but it wasn’t until December 2015 that she described to her an “all out assault” that allegedly left Heard with a cut lip and blood all over her pillow.
“I got the phone call immediately after it happened, her screaming and crying, a stoic woman reduced to sobs,” she wrote.

The moving letter also credits Depp with once saving Tillett’s life, with the actor letting her live with him while she “healed and worked” for a year after.
She writes: “I knew him to be soft and gentle, with a temper and a dark side, but a golden heart. I didn’t want to believe it either, until I saw the wreckage”.
On the night she called the cops, Tillett claims she heard Depp threaten Amber before the actress screamed and asked for help.
It was then that she decided to “break the code of silence that surrounds celebrities,” because she simply had to stand up for her friend.
“Whether we loved him or not has nothing to do with it. When it comes to violence, “love” is no longer part of the equation,” she concluded.
