Makeup application in winter

Winter is the season to have fun with makeup. Here's how to apply it faster and better - just like a pro

Eyes

  • Eyeliner can be tricky if you don’t have a super-steady hand. Create a smooth line by using an eye pencil to draw a series of dashes as close to the upper lashes as possible. Then join the dots. To prevent it fading, trace over the line with a short, stiff eyeshadow brush dipped in a powder of a similar shade. And don’t use more eyeliner beneath the eyes than you do on top.

  • Brighten and widen eyes with a little pale gold eyeshadow at the inner corner. If your eyes are close-set then also try applying eyeliner only at the outer corners.

  • Jet-black lashes can look hard on fair-skinned women. Try a brown shade of mascara instead, for a more subtle and flattering effect.

  • Apply mascara to the bottom lashes first to avoid smudging and mascara “footprints”.

  • Use a light shadow colour as a base to create a clean slate for other shadows.

  • Don’t forget your brows. Use a soft eyebrow pencil to fill in sparse areas, press on a little powdered shadow in the same shade. or, for natural- looking brows, simply set with some clear grooming gel.

Face

  • Customise your foundation. Mix it with a little bronzing fluid if you want to look healthier, a liquid illuminator for a subtle sheen, or with moisturiser for a sheerer coverage.

  • Blusher looking too bright or too dark? Lighten it by sweeping your cheeks with a clean cotton ball or a clean fluffy brush.

  • Use a cheek colour that has some sort of sheen or highlight to it because cheeks need to glow. Matte blush flattens the cheek area and is ageing.

  • Highlight cheekbones by dabbing liquid illuminator just above the apples of the cheeks then up and out towards the temples. Do this after applying blush.

  • Never smile when you’re applying blusher. You’ll create lines around your eyes into which the blusher colour can’t penetrate.

Lips

  • Avoid lipstick bleed by dipping a cotton bud in translucent powder and rolling it just outside the lip line before applying colour.

  • Lip gloss will last loads longer if your lips are completely dry when you apply it.

  • Never chose a lip colour paler than your skin tone. It should be at least two shades darker.

  • Highlight the middle of your lips with a little gloss to give them a rounder, fuller shape.

  • Use a pencil that matches the natural shade of the lips to line and fill them in, then layer colour on top for a longer-lasting look.
