How to avoid summer hair damage

Kiwis love getting out in the sun, and we know to always wear sunscreen on our skin, but sometimes we don't think to apply this theory to our hair. If we want naturally healthy-looking hair, we have to combat this with good hair care.

Felicity Bruce, Joico ambassador and owner of Cocoon Hair Design, Timaru explains why Kiwis are susceptible to summer hair damage and gives her tips on how to avoid it.

What are some of the most common hair concerns you see during the summer months?

Mostly environmental damage. Kiwis love getting out in the sun, and we know to always wear sunscreen on our skin, but sometimes we don’t think to apply this theory to our hair. If we want naturally healthy-looking hair, we have to combat this with a good home haircare regime.

So where do we start?

Consult with your stylist about your hair concerns and your current maintenance routine; they’ll confirm what you might already be doing right and offer recommendations to fill the gaps. The products you may need to achieve the look you’re after also present a great opportunity to give yourself some time out, such as spending 10 minutes letting a mask work its magic.

What are the best ways to protect our hair?

Looking after your hair by offering it daily protection will mean you have more choice as to what you can do with it. Before adding heat, you should use a thermal protection spray or a moisturising cream product.

To protect your hair from the elements when you leave the house, finish your blow-dry with a product, that offers shine and a protective shield against colour fade and moisture loss.

We love using products that tackle a few hair troubles in one, but how do they work?

We all want simple ways to achieve the best results, and now we have the products to do it. Use a product that heals damaged hair with ingredients like argan, manketti and evening primrose oils that provide moisture, strength, shine and softness – all the good things! Add a couple of drops to damp hair, blow-dry and straighten or simply leave to air dry.

How do you go about fixing damage at the salon?

In the salon we can offer luxury treatments that not only strengthen, hydrate and restore the hair’s lustre but also provide that all-important sense of pampering. Colouring services that maintain the hair’s integrity coupled with a beautiful haircut always result in a healthy look.
