This time of year poses challenges for your skin. We’ve got some expert tips and must-have products to prevent those harsh winds and freezing temperatures doing their worst.
Auckland dermatologist Liz Baird says that as the weather gets colder and humidity falls, our skin can become drier and more easily irritated, even flaky and itchy. All of the body will be affected, not just the face.
“Most of us need to use more moisturiser in the winter,” says Liz. “The greasier it is, the more effective it will be, so find one you like.”
Liz recommends looking for products containing glycerin as this intensively moisturises and boosts the resilience of skin. Also, she warns, don’t forget sunblock. Even in winter, we have sunny days, and skin-damaging UVA rays will cause premature ageing if skin is left unprotected.
5 quick tips:
- Exfoliate your face and body twice a week to help skin soak up maximum moisture.
- Avoid taking long, hot baths and showers.
- Rub in body creams when you step out of the shower, immediately after towel drying. Even the humidity in the bathroom will help attract moisture into the skin.
- If your skin feels tight and dry 30 minutes or so after moisturising, you need to switch to something richer and more hydrating.
- If your skin feels itchy, avoid using soap and stick to a gentle body wash instead.
