Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's surprising choice of wedding cake - and it's sooooo California chic

Trust Meghan to bring a slice of the States to an oh-so-British event.

No doubt about it, Meghan Markle certainly likes putting her personal touches on pretty much everything.

From her commanding style, inspiring words and love for PDA with Prince Harry, it comes as no surprise that the couple's wedding cake is the essence of Meghan.

Kensington Palace announced overnight that the pair were going organic in their choice.

"For their wedding cake Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have chosen pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of London based culinary gem Violet Bakery."

The couple are ticking of their wedding to-do list in remarkable fashion.

The palace then dished on the flavour, confirming, "Prince Harry and Ms. Markle have asked Claire to create a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavours of spring. It will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers."

"Claire Ptak, who was raised in California, focuses on using seasonal and organic ingredients in her cakes."

The royals revealed that Meghan already has a close connection to the baker, writing, "Ms. Markle previously interviewed Chef Ptak for her former lifestyle website The Tig."

"Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th."

California raised Claire Ptak once featured on Meghan's lifestyle blog The Tig.

Claire's bakery is said to make "American style" cakes, and as you'd imagine this job is definitely the icing on her career-cake!

About the exciting job, Claire said, "I can't tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms. Markle's wedding cake. Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about food provenance, sustainability, seasonality and most importantly flavour, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of."

One of Claire's buttercream cake creations. Could this be an insight into how Meghan and Harry's cake might look?

Meghan first met Claire in 2015, and she published their chat on her lifestyle blog, The Tig.

"Claire has hit the nail on the head with her London bakery serving up delightful treats that have garnered a cult following (in that ever so civilised British way) in the UK and beyond."

Harry and Meghan's cake will be quite different to the one Prince William and Kate Middleton had at their wedding. Theirs was a very traditional fruit cake, and was created by pastry chef Fiona Cairns.

Fiona Cairns stands next to the grand eight-tier cake she created for William and Kate's 2011 wedding.

"The whole cake was — not just the cake but the wedding — was Kate's idea," Cairns revealed to Hello magazine.

"It was all her idea. She's a very creative person and that's why it was so special."

We look forward to seeing what other modern touches Harry and Meghan add to their nuptials!
