Margot’s Kiwi Debut

Tinseltown’s 'It' girl heads to Canterbury for a new movie.

She’s making waves on screen alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street and Will Smith in the upcoming thriller Focus– and now Hollywood’s new “It” girl, Margot Robbie, is coming to New Zealand.

The 23-year-old Australian is playing the leading role in the highly-anticipated blockbuster Z for Zachariah, currently under production in Port Levy, Banks Peninsula. Margot is set to star alongside Star Trek’s Chris Pine and Oscar-nominated 12 Years a Slave actor Chiwetel Ejiofor in the film adaptation of the 1974 novel by Robert C O’Brien.

But the part comes at a price – Margot is forgoing Tinseltown’s biggest night, the Academy Awards in March. However, the chance to film the role of a lifetime in one of the most scenic parts of New Zealand is too good to refuse.

“The Critic’s Choice and the Golden Globe Awards were so much fun so I feel I have had a taste of awards season already, so I don’t mind if I miss the Oscars,” said Margot, who scored the role after actress Amanda Seyfried dropped out for scheduling reasons.

“I am going to be filming in New Zealand when it’s on, so it’s all going to depend on shooting schedules and being able to pop off to LA and then get back in time.”

The film, directed by Craig Zobel, tells the story of a farm girl who believes she is the sole survivor of a nuclear holocaust.  The seaside farming town of Port Levy stands in for a small valley in the Midwest of the US.

The area is the same location where Sir Peter Jackson filmed his breakthrough 1994 drama Heavenly Creatures.

Margot, who hails from the Gold Coast, has come a long way since her first job at Subway. She has been the talk of Hollywood during awards season, landing on many best dressed lists, and several leading men have taken to the starlet. Margot and Leonardo DiCaprio (39) were said to be dating last year. And last November, Will Smith (45) was caught taking provocative photos with the actress during a crew party.

Meanwhile, soon-to-be-divorced Orlando Bloom (37) was seen “nuzzling” Margot at a Golden Globes party two weeks ago. Hours before she was seen with The Hobbit star, the actress claimed to have sworn off actors.

“No, I don’t really wanna date an actor, so this probably isn’t the night I’m gonna find someone,” she told E! News.
