Father-of-four’s life support turned off after final wish granted

Auckland man Daniel Kopa has passed away after being hit by a car on Tuesday.

Auckland father-of-four Daniel Kopa has died after his family made the decision to turn his life support off.

The 34-year-old had been in Auckland Hospital after being struck by a car on Hobson Street on Tuesday.

The dad of four daughters – Harper (5), Zoey (2) and eight-month-old twins, Eden and Charli – had his final wish of finishing a tattoo tribute to his children granted before he passed away, when a local artist visited him in hospital.

It is understood his wife, Calli Cleland, made the decision to turn off his life-support on Thursday evening, and he died shortly after.

“He held his daughters in his arms,” Kopa’s best friend, Johnny Chambers, told Fairfax.

“He’ll watch his girls from up there. We need to talk about Dann around his girls so they know who their father is.”

Auckland Mayor Phil Goff has paid tribute to Kopa and Cleland, who he has know since they were children.

“It is absolutely heart-breaking for Calli to lose the love of her life and for four little girls to grow up without their dad,” he wrote on Facebook.

“I hope we can help Calli be strong for her girls.”

A Givealittle Page has been set up for the young family. So far, almost $90,000 has been donated.
