Ewen MacDonald – the man charged with, then later acquitted of murdering his brother-in-law Scott Guy in 2012 – has recently been spotted playing club rugby in Christchurch.

MacDonald was released from prison on parole last year, after serving five years of a custodial sentence for charges relating to Scott Guy and his family.

MacDonald was also charged with the murder of Guy, who died after being shot with a shot gun at close range outside his rural Feilding property, but was found not guilty after a jury trial at the Wellington High Court.

However, he was found guilty on a raft of other offences which included vandalising Guy’s home, killing 19 calves and burning down an historic farm building.

Following his release from jail, NZME reported MacDonald was living in Christchurch and had a new partner who he was planning on moving in with.

Now Fairfax reports Macdonald was seen playing rugby yesterday for Christchurch club team, the Belfast Munchers.

It has also been reported that his new partner was on the sidelines watching him as he played in the Canterbury senior classics division six competition.

He was on the field for 60 minutes of the game as flanker before being subbed off.

Belfast Rugby club president Dave Pilkington told Fairfax he was initially unaware MacDonald was playing for the club.

Pilkington later said the club had “no issues” with MacDonald.

“He has slotted into the Munchers team, he’s paid his subs.

“Obviously he has moved into the community and is starting a new life, served his time and we are not prejudging him.

“Who are we to judge a guy that has served his time?”
