If you thought their awkward nuptials were uncomfortable to watch on Married at First Sight NZ, try being shell-shocked groom Ben Blackwell, who described his wedding as “the worst day of my life”.

Speaking to Woman’s Day, the 26-year-old Auckland insurance consultant – who married Christchurch ambulance officer Aaron Chisholm, 26, in a tense cliff-top ceremony last week – says the overwhelming day is one he’d rather forget.

Looking visibly uneasy, Ben squirmed at the altar, avoided eye-contact with Aaron during their coastal vows – which he said was actually down to being blinded by the sun – and tells us he got far too drunk on his big day.

Yet despite Ben’s obvious discomfort and disregard for Aaron, the couple – who found a shared passion for travel and socialising over a good glass of wine – tell us they are determined to give their marriage a go.

Passionate about marriage equality, Three newlyweds Ben and Aaron feel incredibly grateful same-sex marriage is legal in New Zealand, and say their union is not something they take lightly.

“Both of us could walk away at any point,” tells Aaron, “but we are committed. We came into this knowing marriage never going to be a walk in the park.”
