Steve Carell, star of The Office, Anchorman, and probably a few of your other favourite comedies, stepped out to promote his new movie Despicable Me 3 last week, and nobody could have predicted the fuss it’d cause.

The 54-year-old was photographed in London on Wednesday, posing with Minions, his co-star Kirsten Wiig and waiting fans. But all eyes were well and truly on him and him alone, with the actor’s newly grey hair causing a big stir with fans online.

Many took to Twitter to comment on the transformation, with one user writing: “Someone plz tell me when Steve Carell got grey and turned into George Clooney’s brother”, and another sharing: “Honestly take your Goslings and your Zayns Malik and give me 2017 Steve Carell”.

Take a look back at the actor’s transformation over the years in the gallery below.

The actor caused a stir when he stepped out in London to promote his new Minions movie.

In 2006, a younger Steve was just breaking out into the Hollywood scene. In 2006, he scooped the MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance for the raunchy comedy The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

The following year, a dapper Steve suited up to attend the 30th Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC.

Steve was still rocking the clean-shaven look for the Sydney premiere of Crazy, Stupid, Love in 2011.

At the Cannes Film Festival in 2014, the actor got cosy with pal Mark Ruffalo, his co-star in the film Foxcatcher.

By 2015, the actor was settling into his style with black-framed glasses and a sharp suit, pictured here attending the 87th Academy Awards Nominee Luncheon.

Last year, the actor embraced the beard while on the red carpet with wife Nancy at the 88th Annual Academy Awards.
