Radio star Megan Sellers: Why I’m grateful to be walking again

Megan Sellers shares how recent surgery has given her a new outlook on life and fitness.

Megan Sellers is the co-host of ZM’s Fletch, Vaughan and Megan. She tells us how she schedules in ‘me time’ to counteract early starts and busy days.

Love your Body

I used to read quotes from women saying that as they got older they became less critical of their body; they learned what it’s capable of and just got on with life. That’s kind of where I’m at.

I have hip dysplasia that was only recently diagnosed, so that has created limitations for me, but having spent five weeks on my back unable to move, post-corrective surgery, you become grateful with just being able to walk again. Every activity is an achievement.

Keeping the balance

I love to cook, and I like to make healthy home-made versions of my favourites. If I want something yummy, but want to be good, I lean toward bunless burgers. I use lettuce leaves from my garden as the ‘bun’, then add heaps of veges and some strong cheese, so I use less.

My favourite indulgence would be something Italian. I’d live on bread and pasta if only my butt would allow.

Get moving

I used to do sports purely as a way to exercise. I played netball for 12 years and I used to do roller derby. But now I tend to just go to the gym, because I can schedule it.

I don’t have the time to commit to a sports team, sadly, but I’m really enjoying running at the moment. I find it challenging, so it’s a great way to take my mind off things, because I have to really put my all into just finishing the workout.

Where is your favourite place in New Zealand for a weekend away?

That’s so hard. I love going home to Nelson and spending time in Golden Bay and specifically Kaiteriteri. But I love it up north too – there are some stunning beaches, rock pools and walks.

Finish these sentences

When I’m feeling stressed, I know I need to… have some alone time and watch the Kardashians. Then I don’t need to think!

The reason I get out of bed each morning is… to do my radio show. I enjoy working and keeping busy.

I feel most comfortable when… wearing pencil skirts, oddly, and I feel more myself when I’m wearing heels. I feel comfortable when I look my best.

The piece of advice I’d give my 13-year-old self is… ignore boys who are mean. They don’t deserve your attention, and one day you’ll find someone wonderful. In the meantime, get smarter!
